Olivia (23 months) scooted, and she too was extremely fast!!! She was actually pretty amazing to watch. She got more coordinated with time, but even now, whenever she falls, she falls on her left side, since I guess she cannot brace her fall. We've already had 2 sets of stiches, and should have had a 3rd, but didn't because it was very close to her eye. You could try some area rugs, but my experience is that there is always something to get hurt on (the coffee table, falling off the couch, fingers in the hinge of the door, etc, etc!!)

Hey There
Cassidy still scoots as her means of transportation! I remember she started around ten months (she's 15 months now)and she used to fall all the time on our wood floor. It didn't take her long to get her balance and develop extremely strong abdominals...she still falls now once in a while when she gets going to fast or something.....my sister in law joked about tying a pillow around her waist in case she fell...which I seriously considered but never did :) Don't worry she'll get the hang of it!

My daughter, Zavian(now 4 yrs. old) started scooting at 9 months...and my, COULD SHE COVER SOME GROUND!!! We actually vidoetaped her "running" from her brothers. She could have won a marathon the way she scooted down the hall! When she started walking was when she had the balance issues, which resolved itself after about 6-8 months of knots on her forehead, bruised lips, etc. I guess she finally learned.
