Easier way to eat corn on the cob??

Post by Taylor »

Are there any one handed options for holders to make it easier to eat? I always end up having to have it cut it off the cob.

Brandon my 8 1/2 year old, uses a fork and stabs it in the ear of corn....I know he is a boy....they he uses his left hand to hold the fork and eats away.....He canb actually hold the corn one handed, but is lazy. Another way he likes it but my family hates it is when I leave some of he cob on the bottom....like a handle. That way he is not stabbing it with a fork......this is how he likes to at corn when we are at a picnic....stabbing his fork in it makes him look different !!! GAYLE

Hi Taylor, I'm Maia's mom. I always cut her corn pieces in half so it's not to long of a piece and she holds it with her unaffected arm. I also let it cool off so that it's no problem holding it. I hope that helps,

I stopped using the cob holders and just strated holding it with my left hand. You get a bit messy but it still tastes great! For the mess I just have an extra napkin or a damp towel near by.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Amy
I'm like you... I love corn on the cob and only eat it at home.
It's messy but tastes great and I'm just enjoying my corn instead focusing on how others see me!
I actually have a system.
First, I eat all the corn at one end and turn the corn around put a napkin on it and eat the rest.
Yummy, Yummy

no external rotation against gravity, can only go to 90 degree fwd flexion, no hand-to-mouth
1 surgery at age 14 (latissimus dorsi transfer). In 2004, at age 28 I was struck with Transverse Myelitis which paralyzed me from the chest down. I recovered movement to my right leg, but need a KAFO to walk on my left leg. I became an RN in 2008.

I eat it one handed too as I have trouble using my left for getting food to my mouth (I can with corn, but it's tiring). I use a paper towel wrapped around one end to hold (on the right for me). Messy a bit but YUM (had corn tonight actually!)

I'm no expert...but if the pieces were short, couldn't you hold it much like an apple? With a thumb on one end and the middle finger on the other?? It might be messier, but that's the great thing about corn on the cob...it's supposed to be messy! It's like eating ribs and trying not to get messy....doesn't work! :)

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".
