The medical resource directory has just been updated with the contact information and questionnaire answers by Mr. Rolfe Birch of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the UK.

We so could have used this board 9 years ago. That article was wonderful and I had always heard get a second opinion. A few days after my sons injury I had the audacity to ask for a second opinion. The neurosurgeon at that hospital my son was helicoptered to acted like I had just committed a felon. Not only did he refuse, but when we finally found drs. willing to take him the original dr. would not release his medical records. It took a lawyer to finally get them. It has been 9 years now, but in hindsight I think we had a legitimate lawsuit, but never pursued it as we had more important things to worry about at the time than the drs. ego.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

thank you nancy, his questionnaire answers make very interesting reading. Interesting that he feels a specialist bpi centre is needed per 5 million of population, i agree! Did you send a questionnaire to Simon Kay at Leeds too?

Jenny,

Yes we did send a questionnaire to Simon Kay. Have not heard back from him yet. A list of docs who have been sent questionnaires but who have not yet responded is at http://ubpn.org/medicalresources/nrdocs.html

Thanks Liz.

Kathleen Kennedy is chairing this committee and is sending out the questionnaires. I code them when they come back in and put them up on the website. You can send suggestions with contact information to her at kathleen@ubpn.org
