Dr. Kozin/Scapula
At Alannah's visit with Dr. Kozin, he said that her winging scapula was helping her obtain the movement that she has, and if it were fixed, her function would be affected. Anyone else been told the same? Thanks - CMB

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

If my scapular was stable I don't think I would be able to move.
All the movement I have is from my shoulder and scapular.

Yes, we were also told that without the winging our sons range would be greatly diminished.

Yes, Dr. Nath and Dr. Shenaq told us the same thing about Ruthie's scapula. Nancy

Definitely Amber's ROM is lessened when we stabilize her scapula. Try it by stabilizing your child's scapula. Dr. Kozin has told us the same thing. You can strenthen the muscles around the scapula, but to do a surgery that would inhibit scapular movement is not something that is in our daughter's particular best interest.

Re: Dr. Kozin/Scapula
the only real way to stabalize the scapula is to fuse it to the spine so you would lose all movement because the splint isn't going anywhere!
I just had a tendon transfer last week to see if we can stabalize my scapula a little bit because for me when my scapula is more stable like when I lay down (it cant wing out) I have much better range and even a fair amount of strength. But sit up and the stability is lost and my range decreases greatly! So far the winging of my scapula is not evident in my back, I am not allowed to move my arm up so I have no idea if it still wings to the side or not.
I had this surgery to make movement easier and to decrease pain caused by my unstable scapula.
I would continue to strengthen the scapular stabalizers and go from there, if it caused her pain when shes much older then talk about correcting it.
