is this normal???
is this normal???
I am 25 and never had any problems before now. All of the sudden I am getting strange muscle spasms in my hand that is affected. I notice it mostly when I'm not doing anything, my fingers will just start moving?? I went to the doctor today and he had no idea what I was talking about. I would like to know if this happens to anyone else and how i can stop it? Thanks!!
Re: is this normal???
Kelly,
Happens to me all the time. I don't know if you can stop it or not, i have never tried to, I don't worry about it because it doesn't prevent my movement or hurt in any way. I always just figured that the more nerve messages that were getting through, the better, even if they are unsolicited.

Happens to me too. Though mine now are accompanied by pain. My doctors were boggled as well because they had no idea what BPIs were or how they worked.

I get them too! I think taking zinc help or eating foors high in zinc. I have learned to control to twitched in my little finger but now my thumb twitches and thats annoying. Doesnt hurt, just annoying. I cant remember if I have asked my dr. before or not, though it would be fun to show him and see what he says. If I remember I will do that before my next surgery.

Re: is this normal???
Kelly,
Yes it does happen. I was told by my physical therapist that it might just be the nerve trying to fire up and get moving. I noticed it a lot more when I had over used my arm. There honestly isn't a whole lot you can do for it. I had the TES unit and when I over use my arm i will put the unit on and it sends little shocking signals to the nerves to tell them to work. Sometimes when I had it up to high it would do that also. It is a strange feeling and very uncomfortable. I call them "zings" the ones that shoot up and down your whole arm. The spasms though are very annoying. Hang in there and let it be known that you are not alone.
*HUGS* Hang in there.

Sometimes my OBPI index finger or thumb twitches. It's annoying, but I know from experience that it will stop soon. It might happen just once, or it might happen several times over the course of a week or so. Then it stops. I have no idea what triggers it, or what stops it.

I just want to thank everyone for your help. I actually just came across this site because my doctor is no help, he has never even heard of this injury and I've never known anyone else that has it. So, having people to talk to about it is really helpful for me... So, thanks everyone..

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Welcome to the adult/obpi Message Board.
I am sure you are happy to find someone who actually understands what you are talking about.
If you read many of the older posts about people on this message board you will see we all thought we had a rare injury.
I was 60 the week I found this site.
I was thrilled when I first met someone with our injury.
I hope you will look into coming to Camp 2007 in Sept.
You will meet many adults as well as children with obpi.
Welcome again and please feel free to any question that comes to mind.
There are no silly questions just a lot of unanswered one for people like us.

P.S. My hand use to twitch more and shake more when I was younger, than it does now.
I guess aging seems to have helped. I still get the zingers up and down my arm at times and the cramping, crazy pain in my upper arm.
