Is there anyone in my area that can help me out?

Post by Theresa »

I'm from Brooklyn, NY and I have an almost 6 year sweetie pie named Nicolette. She suffers from Erb's palsy in her left arm. Her case is pretty severe. She can't raise her left arm without the assistance of her right arm, her elbow doesn't straighten, and she has problems with supernation (I know I spelled that one wrong), she also has problem with range of motion and shoulder abduction (I think that's what it's called). I guess what I'm looking for is a specialist here in NYC. Also my daughter has not been receiving any therapy since the end of June of 2001, (that's when the board of ed here in NYC does not supply therapy to children because the school year is over. So if any one can help in any way, I would appreciate it.

Hi Melissa,
I don't live in NY anymore, but there is a BPI clinic at Beth Israel, here is the link
http://www.nyneurosurgery.org/cfr/brachial/plexus.htm
You may want to consider also Dr Waters at Boston Childrens Hospital, that's only about a 4 hour drive or 1 hour flight (video evaluation too) his phone number is 6173554849 and e-mail is peter.waters@tch.harvard.edu
Texas Childrens Hospital does video evaluation, and some of the physicians attend picnics around the country, I don't know of anymore this year, but they usually pick up again in the spring. You can contact Lisa Davis RN their coordinator at 8003645437 or e-mail Dr Nath at rnath@bcm.tmc.edu
As far as therapy in NY schools, can you tell me why your daughter isn't receiving services? My cousin is an o/t in the public school system in the city and by the sounds of your daughter severity she should still qualify for services. Feel free to email me anytime.

Hello, I'm a former New Yorker currently living in Florida. My 7month old is under the care of Dr. Grossman in Miami. He also has an office in NYC and I believe is affiliated with Columbia Hospital. Here is his toll free number 800-668-2778 and his website is:
http://www.handandnervespecialist.com/ and another site that helped me with links, resources, and exercises is: http://membrane.com/bpp/index.html Also, you might want to check if the state of New York has an EIP program. This is to cover costs of your insurance copays/added therapy visits, etc. Good Luck!! Our prayers are with you.

Hi, Jamie
thaks for such a quick reply. I've never been to a message board before. I found this one very interesting, especially considering the reason that we are all here. I appreciate the info you've passed along and I will be contacting my daughters ped. bright and early on Monday morning so that he can help me to look in to things further. I did check out that website and I will also mention that to him.
Againg THANK YOU!
