Make a law

Post by joseph »

Is it only in California that BPI don't have to be reported by hospitals??? How can we change this? Does anybody else feel the same? We should all rally together and get a law passed the requires all injuries to be reported.

I think the only state that requires it is Iowa.

http://www.legis.state.ia.us/GA/78GA/Le ... rrent.html

The first step is to get one of your state reps to listen to your cause, and back it. They are the ones who have to introduce the bill. I believe the woman who started it in Iowa was Kathleen Kennedy.

From online:
Kennedy's efforts have not stopped there. As the lead contact for the Iowa Brachial Plexus/Erb's Palsy Informational Network, she has been working at both the state and federal government levels to increase awareness about the injury. In Iowa, Kennedy has been actively working with State Senator Kitty Rehberg and two bills are on the table for consideration as a result of their efforts. Bill 251 proposes a birth registry to document cases of obstetric brachial plexus palsy in Iowa. Bill 252 would establish an obstetrical brachial plexus palsy referral program at the University of Iowa hospitals and clinics to provide information about other facilities around the country that specialize in this area. Kennedy is also involved in a mass mailing project to family practitioners and pediatricians in the state of Iowa.

From our website:

Iowa Brachial Plexus Network
Kathleen Kennedy
PO Box 234
Walford, Iowa 52351

Kathleen@ubpn.org or katkenia@aol.com

She may be a good contact to see how to get things started in your own state.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

I would suggest printing out the Iowa statutes, and making an appointment with one of your state lawmakers. You have to have a champion to bring your bill to a session to present it for consideration. Ms. Kennedy has done a lot of legwork already with the language, it may be easiest to just piggyback what she has already accomplished!
