Anyone use the Anat Baniel method?

Post by Mica »

Hi,

I posted a question about helping my daughter, Aria, avoid future physical pain from her OBPI. Amy was kind enough to share with me that a large part of her pain comes from compensatory movements, both past and present. (thank you, Amy!) I have been doing reasearch about this, and came across a therapy designed by a PT named Anat Baniel. The therapy is designed to help the child learn to use their body correctly, and avoid these compensatory movements that can lead to future physical pain.

I would truly appreciate hearing your experiences (good or bad) with this therapy. My husband and I want to make the best decisions for our little girl, and advice from adults who have lived with this injury is invaluable in our decision making process.

Has anyone here used the Anat Baniel method? (Or any other form of PT designed to help the child NOT use compensatory strategies?)

Thank you!!!

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

There are all different types of OT that may help.

It is important for a child to learn to use their body efficiently instead of over using the unaffected arms.

Here is another therapy that might help

I think that I overused my entire body because I was too stubborn to let anyone help me. I was always so determined and felt I never wanted anyone to do anything for me that I could do myself. I am paying a heavy price for it now with many secondary conditions. Some of them could have been prevented. I was so determined not to give up, I would not let myself accept help. Most two handed people will allow someone to help them and/or admit that something is hard for them. I just could not back away from anything.

I feel that good OT instruction is key to learning how to put some balance and allow independence without foolish stubborness.

Mica,
your welcome! I love to share my experience if it might help someone else.

I was wondering if you had a website that explained the type of therapy you are talking about. I would like to read up on it.

Thanks,
Amy

Sure!

Please let me know your thoughts! There is even a 27 minute video of Anat Baniel working with a young brachial plexus victim.
