Good luck, tk!
Good luck at the Mayo. You will be well looked after. Let us know how it all goes.
Re: Good luck, tk!
Thank you so much, today is the day Masen is now in surgery which will last 6 or 7 hours, could be more. They are saying that they think C5-T1 are torn out, although there is some question about C7 because three fingers do move involuntarily. They of course give us the worst case scenario and hope for better as Dr. Spinner and Chin are saying that Masen's case is very severe. One of the worst cases they have seen in a child. Sincerely TK

Hi Tammy,
Just letting you know we're "with" you today. It is SO hard to be the parent of an injured child, isn't it? We want to take their place, and can't. You are in very good hands at Mayo, as I'm sure you already know. Please keep us posted.
Take care,
Ellen

Yes it is so hard waiting. They are grafting nerves now, I am not sure yet if they also did nerve transfer, my son is doing ok they tell me, but you don't get enough information from the nurse communicator, I ask questions, but she can't answer them, she says wait till you talk to the surgeons, I wish I could hear what they are talking about in the operating room. THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT AND PRAYERS. Sincerely TK
Re: Good luck, tk!
Having just been there on jan 4th for nerve surgery, I can tell you to try to find comfort in Dr. Spinner confidence and calm in his voice. It worked for me and for my parents who waited the 10hrs. I hope it all goes smoothly for your son and you find peace in knowing you are doing all you can.
Re: Good luck, tk!
Well the situation was as grim as they thought it might be, they had to graft nerves along with the transfer from the left side to the right side. There of course is hope that he will regain some function. They made six incisions. They are saying that C5 through T1 are all torn out, but they are not sure about the finger movement, they left that area alone because they said that hopefully it will heal and get better but if not then the movement is more than they could have done. Due to Masen being so young, I think he has a good chance. He has come along ways in the 6 months since his accident so I am going to have high hopes for the outcome of this surgery. He is now in recovery and the breathing tube has been taken out and they say he is breathing on his own just fine. TK

TK, my thoughts are with you today. I pray that Masen's recovery with go as smoothly as possible. I know how hard it is to wait. I know how hard is is to be a parent of a child with an injury. I have been in your shoes....only when my son was seven months old. I think they had to replace the carpet....LOL I had it worn away the ten hours he was in surgery. Keep your chin up, we are all thinking about you !!! GAYLE Son of Brandon 8 1/2 ROBPI !
Re: Good luck, tk!
I'll be interested as the recovery progresses (over the long term) the extent that Masen can retrain his brain with the signals. My son John was fifteen when he had his surgeries, and he had no problem getting his brain to ultimately think 'move left arm' and the part of the nerve that had come from the right side correctly moved the left. But Mayo told him he was too old at fifteen to feel the sensation of touch in his fingers from the intercostal (rib) nerves - that instead he'd always feel the sense of touch in his chest when his fingers touched something. (He had all bpi nerves avulsed.) So keep us posted long, as well as short-term!
Thanks,
Ellen
Thanks,
Ellen

Masen has had a restless night, out of it, but not really sleeping, they had to put him on oxygen because he was not taking deep enough breaths and his oximeter reading kept going to low. He has morphine for pain and so far has refused to take anything by mouth, not even a popsicle. We will be here in the hospital until Sunday or Monday. Sincerely TK
