tooth decay and oxygen deprivation
I just took my 2 1/2 year old daughter, who has Erb's palsy, to the dentist for the first time because we noticed a black spot on one of her teeth. It was a cavity and it had to be filled. She has another one also that has to be filled. My dentist told me that they see that a lot in children who were oxygen deprived at birth, especially kids with cerebal palsy. Has anyone heard this before? I am learning a lot about Erb's Palsy and my delivery, but, I had never heard that before. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have never heard this before but it would explain alot about Michaela's teeth. She breast fed for 11 months and never slept with a bottle and had bad cavities in her front teeth. The pediatric dentist didn't believe me and then blamed it on drinking through a straw. By age 2 she had a strip crown on one of the top front. By age 4 she had fillings in the 4 front top plus the strip crown and now at 5 and a half 2 back molars are filled. It took them 20 minutes to resuscitate her and her organs all started shutting down at birth. I sure hope her permanent teeth do better. The front 4, top and bottom are loose. I sure would be interested in more information about this. Another thing to hunt about on the internet!LOL LeeAnne

Wow, I've never heard this before either. Atticus has already had a cap and fillings by the time he turned 2. He is breastfed and never had a bottle, or sippy cups of juice all day.

Thanks for your response. Pleaes let me know if you find anything on the internet. I am going to do some looking myself. The dentist said that kids with cerebal palsy have a lot of problems. I think I will begin my research with some cerebal palsy sites. I am also going to call my dentist to see if he can direct me to more information. I was so concerned with getting her tooth filled yesterday, I really didn't have time to think of additional questions. By the way...she did really well getting the filling, which I couldn't believe. She actually giggled while he was doing it. She did better than I do at the dentist!

Jameson age 13 needs 3 crowns right now(He's had tons of cavities)...The dentist said something interfered with his tooth enamel developement but doesn't know what. I read something about x-rays but I don't really know.

Liz, you just described my children exactly. Kelsey is 5 and had only one small cavity. Austin is 3 now, but at 2 had 7 cavities. Kelsey was resusitated after birth. Austin was c-section
