Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

London UK?
If there are any UK parents/injured people out there who haven't been referred to the bpi specialists at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, or Dr Kay at St James's Leeds, get your GP to do it asap, these guys offer world class treatment completely free under the NHS. There are others equally as good but these guys are known throughout the world for their bpi work. Some people never get referred through GP ignorance and don't get help until it's too late-by all means seek opinions wherever you want to, but the UK doctors are fantastic and it's free.
See also the adult injured support group www.tbpi-group.org and the UK Erbs Palsy group for support and advice from bpi families and sufferers in the UK. I don't see too many posters here from the UK, if you're a lurker and haven't got yourself in touch with any support organisations in the UK, you can mail me at jennybradley@xtra.co.nz for adult injuries or karen hillyer at erbspalsygroup.freeserve.co.uk for obstetric injuries.
