Searching for help and answers to questions
I was in a car accident 3 years ago. With the head injuries I had they did not expect me to make a meaningful recovery, so I guess they thought I would not need my arm since I was supposed to be a vegetable. But have recovered about 95% from all that except my TBPI. I have an avulsion of C7-T1 and a strech injury to C5-6. My doctors at UAB in Alabama say there is nothing that can be done. But, I have gotten some promissing evaluations from Dr Nath by email, I have gone to Dr Tung in St Louis and a Dr Weikert in Nashville at Vanderbilt. They say that they might be able to restore some arm function but no hand. Some use is better than none. Has anyone had a tendon transfer or nerve transfer after 3 years or more and what was the out come. Any information would be a great help.

Hi Anthony,
Do you live near UAB? My son is John Floyd, who is sometimes mentioned on these posts. He lost all five nerves four years ago & had surgeries at Mayo Clinic.
Even though John's surgeries were within a few months of his injury, the gracilis transfers done for him have also been done for people with injuries long before surgery. Since the gracilis muscle/tendon/nerve is moved from the leg into the arm, it can functionally replace original muscles that have long atrophied from lack of use.
John is now a college student at Samford in Birmingham. Email me if you might be interested in contacting or meeting him.
Take care & keep asking questions.
Ellen
