Thank you guys for all the input. I'm gonna give the hospital a call and ask them about the numbing cream.

My son has had 3 MRIs at Children's in Boston. As the previous posters said, each child reacts differently. The first two, when he was 2 & 3 went well. The next one he was a bit older and had a bad reaction. Now my son is 7 years old and he needs another MRI in the spring but we will do it without sedation. Childrens does use the EMLA cream. I just wanted to add one thing, if your child has a cough, cold or fever they will cancel the MRI. If you have any doubt when you go, call the hospital first. We were sent home the first time because my son developed a cold the morning we got there. Good luck.
