What are our five and six year olds doing in summer camp

Post by admin »

Would love to know what your five and six year olds are doing for summer camp. I registered my BPI daughter with a Karate Camp becuase the owner of the school is the only person that knows anything about BPI, and he is also really motivated to help to make my child less timid in sports...

I know that I am late in writing, but I actually have the time to make a change if your feedback indicates that I should...

Thanks

My granddaughter just went to a weekend BPI summer camp where an instructor came in and demonstrated TaeKwonDo. The instructor herself had a ROBPI, and her facility includes kids as young as three and four! All of the kids that participated really seemed to enjoy this activity - Camille B.

Juliana has been going to a regular summer camp since she was 4 years old.

I explain about the injury, meet with the counselors prior to camp and give them the Q&A sheet about bpi. She has always enjoyed it and I never had an extra person to help her (she has a serious injury).

This summer she told me she didn't want to go there, she wanted to ride horses. Okie dokie. She used to go to a therapeutic riding program on the grounds of a large horseback riding facility. I called for info on their summer camp and there was room for her. It is a regular camp (swimming 2x a day, sports, arts and crafts, drama) but they ride horses 2x a day too! I told them that she used to go to "Horseability" (the therapeutic program) and that we stopped because we couldn't find a mutually agreeable time. Well, they are going to have her ride with the Horseability people during riding periods. All of the kids in the groups split up during riding periods anyway (like swimming-it is based on ability, not age), so she will just go there. She will spend 4 weeks at this camp, then do 1 week at the residential camp that her sibs go to (they are there for 7 weeks) and then she and I will play for 2 weeks until the sibs come home.

I love regular camps because they offer so many different things. Sports that kids didn't think they could do, and usually, tons of swim.

We encourage Juliana to try everything.

good luck,
claudia

My daughter goes to a regular camp with all the normal camp activities. It is family run and they are very aware of all the "stuff". The place is different then others we experienced because the staff really loves to be there and they are very connected with the children. (unlike another 2 camps we exeperienced that had students running it and they couldn't have cared less) They truly watch out for her. For example, when she couldn't play volleyball because the ball was too much for her, they played beachball volleyball instead. It's a camp with a heart. They also have 3 nurses on staff. Summer is incredible - the children grow so much, they take leaps and bounds.

My daughter is 7. So a little older than yours, but she has been going to cheerleading camp since she was 5. They swim, and cheer all day long. It's GREAT range of motion etc. Much like Karate. I think Karate camp is a great idea!

OUr six year old goes to a summer program with the church that does crafts, swimming, hiking, etc but she comes home every afternoon so it is pretty much like a summer "day care" type thing. I can't imgaine her staying at a residential camp for 7 weeks so I think I must be overly protective. I like the idea of specialized day camps however, especially if we could trade off, karate, swimming and horseback riding. She would love it!

Residential (or "sleep-away") camps are a fairly Northeastern thing. The camps tend to be located in NY State (throughout upstate), Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. My husband was not thrilled with this idea of "sending the kids away" when my oldest said she wanted to go. He has warmed to is since (okay, so it took 5 years).

I started (a full 8 week summer)right out of 1st grade. I am the youngest of four and I have asked my mom if I "asked" to go...she says she doesn't remember, but I went and was happy!!!

Juliana is also the youngest of four and works very hard to keep up with her siblings. I am being conservative in only sending her for 1 week-she asked for 4 weeks!

The kids learn how to handle themselves, others, and adversity without mom around to fix things. They also learn to have successes and to share them with others. They live in bunks of 12 or 13 kids. The bunks are nice, but not hotel-like. They are on the go all day long. When I was camping age, I used to say the school was the 10 months I had to endure just so I could get to camp. My kids feel the same way.

You aren't over protective, you are not from Long Island!hahhahaha

enjoy your summmer,

Thanks Claudia I was thinking OMG! what is wrong with you not sending her to a sleep over camp. Glad to hear it is logistics rather than parenting! And to the modest clothing asker, I am rather interested in hearing replies to your post. If you don't get many could you ask in a seperate post? I have such a hard time findng time to do shopping and to do this online at a reasonable cost would be terrific!
