How many manuevers are there?? And weight issue...

Post by Natalee (Logan's Mom) »

I know someone out there knows where I can find all the manuevers listed to relieve a shoulder dystocia. Any ideas, anyone?? THANKS!!
Also, thanks for the input on my earlier post...
I think we are doing better daily, over the initial "shock" of going to trial and now we are totally preparing to win! We met with our attorney yesterday and will several more times and that helps. One thing... get this, the defense is focusing on my weight/weight gain with Logan. I could just scream!!
Yes, I am not TWIGGY, I am a 12/14 which is the norm for women today, and I gained almost exactly, no more, than 30 lbs during pregnancy, which is encouraged. I am 5'3" and weigh about 165. Anyway, any straws the defense can grab at they will!! Thanks for the input, it has helped!!
Sincerely, Natalie

the maneuvers are found in Dr. O'leary's book on shoulder dystocia. You can order it at a discounted rate (because you are a bpi parent) from veeoleary@msn.com - I think it's about $40 - it's a great book. (somebody please correct me if I have the email wrong)

Hi Natalie, I was so glad to hear that you are dealing better and getting ready to win! That's great! Your lawyer should know all of the shoulder dystocia manuevers so that he can ask the defense - you will not need to know that unless you just want to know for your own sake. I was thinking about your post and wondering if maybe the defense is trying to show that your weight gain WAS appropriate and that there were no indications that the baby would be too large to pass through safely. Were there any other red flags that the doctor should have picked up on but didn't?

Also, if the baby was NOT in distress then the doctor should have had time to try alternative ways of delivering the baby once it was obvious that the baby was stuck. I really do not understand the weight issue of their focus unless they are pointing out that you had a typical pregnancy with normal weight gain. If they are saying that your weight gain was too much then the doctor should have been even MORE aware of the possibility that the baby might be large and not fit through safely.

Natalee - above all you need to know that YOU did nothing wrong. You did not go to school to deliver your own baby - the doctor did. Whether you gained 2 lbs or 80 lbs, the doctor's job is to know what to do. I think that you are at a point now that you have to just trust your lawyer that he will know his facts. You are under so much stress right now so please just try to take care of yourself so that you are mentally ready for this. Your job is to tell what you remember and that is it. Just answer the questions, be direct, and do not offer more than they ask for or you might confuse your case. Good luck to you!! Christy
