recent car accident
my sister had a car accident on 4/22. We have been told that her c7,c8 and T1 have avulsions from the root. She has been referred to Dr. Scott Wolfe in New York at HSS. However he does not accept her insurance. I am wondering if we should even bother to consider him. As I have read different messages on this site it seems that the Mayo Clinic really has a good handle on these types of injuries. I have called them and they do accept her insurance. Any suggestions to any surgeons in New York, I could check out? Before I head out to Minn.......I greatly appreciate any advice and am happy to have this forum. Thank you

Concerned sister,
You could try calling the insurance company and checking to see if they cover any one in-network or there is a medical resource page on here that you can check out and see if she likes any of those doctors.
It is all about wich doctors you feel comfortable with and which one you trust.
Althought I do not go to Mayo, the doctor I see at shriners works at Mayo, so I know they have great people over there. This is the doctor that I finally trust, that does not mean he is right for every one. But I have heard they they do have a great team there. My doctor actually checks with them regularly on my care, as he is not a bpi specialist (he could be, he has written medical ournals on bpi treatment, but he is not titled a bpi specialist)
Good luck finding the right doctor

Re: recent car accident
How old is your sister? This will play a huge role in finding a doctor to treat her. Some only treat pediatrics.

Sharon,
Just in case you didn't know, primary surgery can be INCREDIBLY expensive, as in multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars. Travelling for surgery is a drop in the bucket in comparison!
I pray your sister finds a doctor she's comfortable with soon, and gets the help she needs. It's great that you are so on top of this so quickly!

Re: recent car accident
My boyfriend was in a Motorcycle Accident on 5/11/05 (Long Island, NY). Due to the severity of his other injuries travel to the Mayo Clinic was out of the question. About 6 months post-accident we went to see Dr. Wolfe. Dr. Wolfe did not accept his insurance either however we went ahead and paid for the initial consultation. He then sent him for an EMG and Myelogram - those doctors did accept the insurance. All the doctors agreed that due to his other injuries, surgery at that time should not be done. We were very happy with Dr. Wolfe, he is extremely knowledgeable and honest and he was well worth the consulation fee.
The Mayo Clinic does accept my boyfriend's insurance as well and he is now stable enough to make the trip. We are in the process of sending all of his records (most importantly Dr. Wolfe's) and setting up an appointment.
