Teen Question Please Help!

Post by ubpncathy »

Hi Everyone,
My teenage daughter's having trouble with her UNAFFECTED wrist...

Although it's been a few months since she's complained of this type of pain in her UNAFFECTED wrist, today, it is hurting again. Interestingly, there's a little red dot on her thumb bone area and it hurts around her wrist bone area. She claims that nothing unusual has occurred today, and that she did not jam it or injure it in any way.

At times, suddenly she'll feel it seizing up and it becomes painfully sensitive to anything that touches it. I've tried to give her a cold pack, and then a heating pad, but even touching it with her finger causes extreme sharp pain. While she's hurting right now, I know that it will go away, but it will return too.

I'm most interested in hearing from teens and/or their parents, as to whether or not this is common during a growth spurt at this point in their lives, or perhaps it is something else? I've been monitoring usage of her hands/wrist/arms, but I wonder if she's overcompensating and it's taking a toll...I will have to keep a closer eye on this.

Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks,
Cathy

HI Cathy,
Has she ever seen a doctor while this pain was there? It could be tendonitis. I got that often on and off as a teen (i'm 30 now) in my unaffected wrist. I could sometimes find a reason for it to flare up, such as when I practised my clarinet too much or carried my books only in my right hand (I am LOBPI)...

HI, Advil (any NSAID), Ice, rest, Ace bandage. For a bit I had a simple brace I bought at the drugstore, that helped immobilize it...

I gave her Advil when the heat and ice didn't work, and it did help considerably. I'll consider getting the brace to immobilize her thumb next time. Thanks for the advice.

Cathy...Hi, I have tendonitis in my shoulder right now and my doctor told me to try calcium with magnesium. They sell the combo at Walmart. I think it is 1000 mg cal/ 400 mg mag. It really seems to help with the inflamation!!!! I am not sure why it helps, but I figure I could use the calcium anyway. lol Hope this helps. Have you concidered an Xray for a bone spur??? Just an idea.
