Just had to share this with everyone and let the "mother's to be" know how I faired. I have a new grandson weighing 7lb 8oz and I got to hold him in the hospital for about an hour. I had forgotten just how much a little one can weigh on an erb's arm. After about a half hour, I was just about to ask my son for a pillow to put under my arm to rest it on, and he must have read my mind. He went and got a pillow for me before I said anything.
I can hardly lift my arm that night or the next couple mornings. I don't remember having that problem with my kids, but then I was quite a bit younger and my arm was quite a bit stronger. I do rmember using a pillow to rest my erb's arm though, as I had to use my "good" arm/hand to hold the bottle seeing how the injured one is not too coridiated.
New want to be mothers: you will find a way to handle your babies, just remember the pillow really does help. I also have found I had a problem getting out the chair, now that I have osteo, but I'll figure a way!!! (I usually sit in straight back chairs.) Trust me when I say "Where there's a will, there's a way" I even wanted to bring him home with me.LOL LOL LOL... seeing how it's been almost 19 years since my first grandchild was born. Now I have one of each. The worst part is my son lives almost 2 hours away and riding isn't so easy anymore.
Just thought I would share this little tid bit with all of you.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Congratulations... I sat and held one of my new granddaughter for hours with a pillow in the hospital and she was 9 lb. 9 oz... once the pillow is under your arm you do not get the aches.
Be smart hold that sweet little boy as much as you can but get the pillow first. I also put one foot on the chair I am sitting on to rest my bpi arm on. I can't sit in straight back chair spinal damage when I had my kids prevents that....
You will get the hang of it again soon and once you prepare before you take the baby you will not have to pay for the pleasure of holding the baby so much...
Have fun and enjoy the baby.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".
