Car Seats and Surgery

Post by Tracey »

I just got news yesterday that Alexyss is going through with surgery. Her shoulder is disconnected totally now. What kind of car seat can I use? She is probably about 16 pounds. Can anyone offer me helpful advice for primary surgery? Thank you!

Good question. I haven't really thought about details like that yet but I guess I had better get on the ball. Where and when is the surgery?

Tracey - you have to find out what kind of splint she will be in.. Maia had capsulodesis and she did fine in her Century Next Step (and there are tons of car seats that have the same type of design).

We discussed this on the message board a while ago and it became clear that people liked the five point harness that is adjustable in the front the best. That way there's room to get your child in and then you can adjust it to make it tighter. Makes so much logical sense.

If she will be in an airplane splint - where the arm comes out to the side - I'm not sure about this splint - but I'm sure those whose children who had it will come forward.

When is the surgery?

Tracey,
I am assuming that if you are talking primary surgery and under 20 lbs you have a child that is under one year of age.

If this is the case you HAVE to use a rear facing seat. It is not safe for a child that is under 20 lbs and under one year old to ride forward facing. There bones are not strong enough to with stand a crash in a forward facing position. So I can not stress enough that you have to have a child that is less than 1 year and less than 20 lbs rear facing.

If Alexyss is having just the primary surgery with the typical immoblizer then a regular rear facing infant seat can be used or a convertiable one in the rear facing position. If she will have something different I would like to talk with you since I have currently no clue and will have to try and find the answer for you!!
