I was sitting at the cancer clinic this morning when I was talking to a young mother. She was talking about her soon to be 2 yr old son and how he must not be able to feel his fingers because he can't stop chewing the tip off. (I'm talking right to the bone) She went on to say how his arm wasn't right from birth. So of coarse I had to ask. Erb's Palsy? She said yes. Well, she then told me, and boy this made me mad as hell, that the hospital told her it was her fault but that the injury will fix itself. Needless to say I gave her my lawyers name and phone number and she called him up right in front of me and spoke with the secretary. All this time she has been living with the giult of thinking she had done this to her child. I hope the lawyer can help. The sad thing to is I don't think the little boy is getting the help he needs. I told her about Early Intervention and how the public school helps with therapy. I hate when all you can do is give the information and hope they take it. She has a lot on her plate so that leaves doubt in my mind. Thanks for letting me vent.

Chewing off his finger...
Re: Chewing off his finger...
I am so glad you were able to share some info. with that mother. I sure hope she is able to put it to good use. I remember thinking my baby's injury was my fault too, since I was told it happened from the shoulder dystocia and that the baby's shoulders were too big for my pelvis, which in my mind meant he was hurt because my body wasn't built right. I remember feeling like I was the one who hurt my baby. Thanks to education and a very close & clear video tape, I now know a heck of a lot more about what really happened! Best wishes to that mother & her precious son!

Do you think it is common for BPI children to bite there BP side? Hannah bites her hand ALOT. I labeled it as her being self abusive. And left it alone. I told the doctor but they didn't seem to have anything to say about it. She has only broken the skin a few times. Looks like it hurts and looks nasty too.

I would like to know the ages of the children in the self mutilation, abnormal behavior study. I think the behavior is quite normal. It only happens to Gabrielle when she is teething. She does not have much felling in her fingers show she uses them as a chew toy. This makes perfect sence to me- I would not call it abnormal behavior unless she did it all the time.
