I've seen kids who lost some or alot of abduction with this surgery. Dr. Nath says that any abduction losses are temporary and abduction will return within a year. But the surgery is less than 2 years old, so how can he know that for certain?

Like I said earlier. My dr. said that all these surgeries are so new that we don't know the long-term results. That makes it hard to make a decision. I don't know what I would do...we haven't had to face that decision yet. I feel two things very strongly.

1. It takes a lot of courage for parents to make the decision to have their child undergo a surgery that is new and without proven results. They believe that it will help their child and have the courage to go with that.
2. Without people who are willing to take this risk we will never know long-term results. With every new invention, procedure, medication comes risk. For children whose arms have very little or no function parents feel that that risk is worth it.

Hopefully-there will be more statistics in the future because of these brave parents. I'm not for or against surgery just wanted to bring up this point of view.

Guest,

He did the acromioplasty before he left TCH. After he left, he added the triangle tilt scapula rotation components.

That's why parents were being advised to get the triangle tilt even after they'd had the acromioplasty - because he had added to the procedure, and their kids didn't get these added components.

i am wondering has anyone had surgery/ tt or mod/ & their child have mild bpi? my child has been recomended to have these by nath yet the other bpi specialists suggest NOT to have surgery yet. my son has recovered ok w/ range limits & winging, but, no contrators and ball scoket joint in place. i am curious if anyone DID go with nath when he was the only doctor who recomended it? did any other doctor say try botox first? what are the time limits to these? i feel good about who we see and what we have chose to do but, with this thred it brings up emotions b/c tt was recomended to us by nath and we have not done it for the vary reasons stated above. i think the hardest thing about my journey is the medical community. i know docs will never agree but they surely make my decision harder!

Kate,
Please e-mail Dr. Nath directly and ask him how long he has been doing the triangle tilt. It's unfair for you to say things that you perhaps have not spoken to him directly about.
Thanks and please let us know what he says.

Dr. Nath's weblog has an article about the International Society for Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injuries and Dr. Rolfe Birch from the UK. There's a letter from Dr. Birch about the triangle tilt.

I wanted to add here. My child, now 14, continued to gain strength as she grew older and more coordinated. It took her awhile to gain the strength - rode a bike at 6-1/2, monkey bars in third grade, swim team strokes - they grew stonger as she did, soccer - now she is awsome but it took years to build those muscles and cross country and track - she is a contender now! I've always wondered if maybe a surgery would have helped her to become stronger - but I think that her determination is what has helped the most. We've seen so many specialists over the years and all but one has said to not go the surgery route - she was fine as she is and I agreed and so did she. Sometimes I wonder if I just seek out those doctors who tell me what I want to hear! She is happy and content with her abilities and so I am too. It gets easier as your child gets older and has the ability to help with the decision making of what THEY want instead of what you want for them. I've found that my daughter is happy just the way she is and my guilt to try to make her arm stronger was MY problem - not hers. She is happy, athletic, (scored two goals at her soccer tourny on Saturday!!!) can run a mile in 6:25, - - she is fine with her abilities and just needs me to understand that for now.

Christy,

I think it is nice that you said that. Very respectful. Good job. Your daughter is lucky that you are her mum.

Respectfully,
Proud of you.
