Years post surgery and who follows care?

Post by ckjak »

I just wanted to get an idea of which type of doctor or specifically which doctor follows a child after they have had all the surgeries? We live in Maryland and my son Timothy now 7 has had 2 surgeries. At this time we do not anticipate having anymore. We are being followed locally by a physiatrist who is wonderful but we are wondering if we should periodically head down to Texas. The doctor here works closely with Texas and is aware of some of the new procedures so I don't know if we would be wasting our time and $$ on a trip. Thanks for anyones input.

Dr. Nath comes up north many times a year for clinic. It's usually listed on the BPI events message board here or on his website.

My daughter is also 7 and has had 6 procedures with the 7th scheduled for next month. Had it been up to her former therapist, we would have stopped her care with Dr. Nath years ago, but I choose to make the trip to TX every 6 to 12 months for follow up. New procedures and protocols are being devoloped all the time, and I feel better knowing I'm getting the most up-to-date and thorough evaluation available. If ever we are unable to make the trip, it's good to know that a video evaluation is always an option.

have your Physiatrist send your childs records each time he goes for visits to your Dr. in Texas. Ask them to keep you informed of anything else your child might need, and if you dont anticipate any more surgeries soon, follow up with Texas about once a year or so, whatever the Dr. there recommends.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: Hi! I am Laura, the mom of Tyler, who has a ROBPI. I've been a member of this site since 1998 and owe a great deal to the wonderful people in the UBPN community who have helped us along the way get what we needed to get done for Tyler. Tyler is now 14 years old and in the 9th grade. He's a super bright kid and loves his video games. Tyler had the mod quad surgery with Dr. Shenaq shortly before he passed. That was his first and only surgery. Now that he is older he is requesting additional surgery. He'd like to be able to supinate. Our goal is for Summer 2013.

We live in Alabama and we still see Dr. Shenaq in Houston for all of Tyler's follow ups. If we had a spcialist in this area, we would probably just stay here, but since we don't and we trust Dr. Shenaq, it's worth the trip.

Dr. Nath follows our care. My son has had two surgeries and no formal therapy since he was two.....We just saw Dr. NAth at a satellite clinic in Chicago and he was pleased. He took a video to take back with him and told us to e-mail him with any problems. We are in Illinois now and I would never take him to anyone here, they look at me like I have three heads when I say Brachial Plexus Injury. We stick with the doctor that did the surgeries and are happy with the great results. Gayle mom of Brandon 7 1/2 ROBPI !
