Hello, sorry we don't post more often. Appreciate reading the other posts.
4 yr old Josie is 10weeks post mod-quad and is having more problems now at night than she did having the splint on all day and night. Has anyone else experienced this? We are doing all the ROMs religiously. We think this could be more anger rather than pain. I would be angry if people kept taking my brace off in the morning then putting it back on at bedtime for 8 weeks. She has our impatience, sigh... Any advice? Thanks for listening.
Pain during nighttime splinting, post mod-quad
Re: Pain during nighttime splinting, post mod-quad
This is very common. They could be angry about having it put back on and it also could be pain.
With Maia - we would take her capsulodesis splint off and it would take her about 10 mins for her arm to get used to being out of there - she'd hold it up. Actually anytime it got sore she'd hold it up herself.
But getting the splint back on at night was hard. We could get it up into position except for the last 40 degrees and at that point we'd have to stop and do it very VERY slowly. It was most certainly painful for her.
How did we get through the last 8 weeks? By telling her that it was important for her arm -which was working so hard during the day - to be able to get a rest at night. And that her splinty was there to help her arm so that it could work more at getting stronger during the day. On the worst nights she got tylenol, too. But we never stopped putting the splint on so there was no mixed message about it's importance. We would also ask her if there was something special she wanted before she got splinted - and she would pick a special toy or a special book for us to read. While her father would read the book I'd give her a massage to calm her down a bit more.
I hope you guys get it figured out soon. It's a tough time- no doubt about it!
good luck,
francine

Michaela is 8 weeks post op and the last 3 nights has been splintless. She has so much pain after coming out of the splint in the morning, I called Texas and they said if she couldn't tolerate it,ok. She's getting alot of range she never had before in her shoulder movement and also doing some things with her hand she couldn't do before. We're doing the scar massage, ROMS, O.T., Aquatherapy and everything seems to be going well. The main problem she was having with the splint was elbow pain and stiffness the morning after.
Michaela wore the splint the first 6 weeks with only elbow complaints the last 2 weeks, but once it was off for the daytime it got hard for her ,too. LeeAnne
