This is my first time here too. My son, who is 20 now, had a 4-wheeler accident Aug. 18, 2004 which dislocated his left arm and left him with 5 nerve root avulsions C5 -T1. Dr. Nath did his surgery on Dec. 27, 2004. He can extend his elbow out and can move is wrist up about 10 degrees now. He goes to occupational therapy two times a weeek, which is better then physical therapy I believe, he had his 100th visit last week. He is still in so much pain! Will it ever get better? I was wondering what excatly is everyone taking for pain? Cody is on Neurontin 600 mg twice a day, Amitriptyline 25 mg, Cymbalta 30 mg, 100 mcg Fentanyl Patch and Hydromorphone. He was on Actiq suckers for a year, which really helped with the break through pain, but was replaced with Hydromorphone (not working as well). He has had ganglonic blocks (helped for a day or two) and a trial neurostimulator implanted (it helped, but he did not liked the way it felt inside him).

Thank-you,

Robin from Texas

Sorry to hear about your son, but if u read about me in the back pages, My husband had the the same injury with 4 nerve roots avulsion ( except c5, which was streched)
I am glad to know that ur son has got little bit of movements in just 1 year, which is a good sign.
My husband also has the constant nerve pain going on, and he is on Phentanyl patch, amitrypline, ultram, Neurontine. Doctor just gave him a new patch too, i don't remember the exact name but it starts with L and it's a 12 hours patch without narcotics. But nothing seems to be working on him.
his doctor has mentioned about putting a nerve stimulator in his neck, but we don't know yet wether it will help him out or not?
If u don't mind Robin, can i ask u few questions-
as I really want to know the details, what functions ur son has got back, and what activities he can do with that arm, and also what did the doctors says abt that?
In case u need my e-mail
shafalipalhan@yahoo.com
Thanks,
shafali.
