mayo recovery expectations
mayo recovery expectations
I will be traveling to Mayo for an updated EMG and surgery the following day. I am scheduled for two nerve transfers and a tendon transfer. My OT confidently thinks my tricep, deltoid, and wrist inflexor are returning. This is great news, however, only the EMG and the "A" Team at Mayo decide. My question is with surgery recovery expectations. As a high school student, when and will I be able to return to school? Do I need to request our Homebound Tutoring Services?

Re: mayo recovery expectations
My son had surgery at Mayo on Oct 6th. He had three nerve transfers done and was back in school 5 days later. He was very tired and some pain the first couple of weeks and ended up coming home early for 5 days but after that did fine at school. I wish you the best! The team at Mayo is great!

Hi Raymond,
You should have no trouble going on back to school. My son John, at 15, had two extensive surgeries at Mayo & once he was home from St. Mary's Hospital he was able to return to school. We did buy a 2nd set of books so his bookbag wouldn't be so heavy, but that did present a challenge since his class notes were always in the book left at school.
You'll start out in a restrictive sling (John's arm was velcro'd to a foam pad & was immobile). Once John was able to stop using a sling, Mayo still wanted him to wear it at school since the hallways were so crowded w/kids going both ways. They wanted to be sure nothing wrenched his arm back & stretched/tore the newly transferred nerves.
Hope that helps. Good luck with everything, & say 'hi' to the team up there! Keep us posted on how things go.
Take care,
Ellen

Re: mayo recovery expectations
Raymond,
I noticed that you will be having surgery at Mayo in MN. I was just wondering where you are from.
My name is Amy, I am 18 and have a brachial plexus injury to my right arm. My injury was from birth so we have a little different story. Anyway I have had 4 surgeries and have always been back to school with in a week or to work with in a week. This summer was my most recent surgery and I took a week off work, but since it was only a hand surgery I could have gone back to work the day after I got home. However I chose to take the week off just to sleep off the effects of anestesia. I live in Duluth MN for college. I just started my freshman year this fall. If you want to know more about me feel free to visit my bpi website's current journal at www.freewebs.com/bpimn
I hope to hear back from you. Good luck with you EMG and your surgery. I hope that both go well! be prepared for the EMG, I had two when I was younger. If you still have feeling it could hurt a bit. I noticed that mine hurt the worst in my shoulder, but I have little feeling in my hand and lower arm.
