Slow reading with Neurontin

Post by admin »

Here's another wierd topic. Is anyone taking high dose neurontin (Gabapentin) and trying to read alot of material in school etc.? I can't seem to come-up to speed on the reading. I'm doing quite well in school, as my comprehension is good, but I am the slowest reader on earth. I was not a fast reader before the wreck, but this is ridiculous. However, having been on Neurontin ever since I woke-up from my high-speed contact with destiny,I'm not sure whether my sluggish reading is due to Neurontin or a processing problem in the brainbox thanks to that bus bumper.
I really would like some input either way.

I've been on Neurontin for awhile, highest I was on was 1500 because I can't function even somewhat normally on it.

I've had so many cognitive side effects from it, and lots of blurry vision. Reading is a major problem because of it. I absolutely hate the stuff.

My doc put me on Namenda, which helps moreso than the Neurontin ever did, and we're currently weening me off it. It's awful, I'm going through terrible withdrawal symptoms. I'm just glad to be getting off it.

Good luck with your reading.

I am on 2400mg of Neurontin a day (not for my OBPI, but for another neuro problem) and have recently returned to school, and find that I have trouble remembering certain words or things I just studied. I have been told that Neurontin can affect memory. I want to ween it down too, but am afraid of the pain level...

Onepaw, Slow reading and other 'slowness' is what finally forced to me to face up to the fact that 6 years of taking so called pain'killers' was slowly sending me into some weird kind of oblivion.

Wasn't ever on Neurontin, but on high doses of Ametriptylene instead, and it really did srew up my head..kinda filled it with wet cotton wool..(can't think of a better descrition)

Not really an answer to your question, but I do seriously believe that these strong drugs do impair us all mentally to some degree. It's really fantastic that you are back in education...I couldn't face it years ago even when I was offered a place at a college near to me. I couldn't face the long days and was afraid I'd fall asleep at inappropriate times!

Good luck mate! :0)

Thankyou for the reply, I am worried about my cognitive function on this Neurontin dose, but my attempts to "wean down" have so far been unsuccessful. I did get off a pretty stiff load of narcotics within a year of my injury, but have been tied up to Neurontin. In fact, I adjusted my dose from 3900 to 3000mg a couple months ago, but had to step back-up to 3300. Even that does not seem to be enough.
I am trying some alternative therapies (Tao healing)and will keep the site up to date on any progress, if there is any.

Thanks for the reply. Did you have the same negative side effects with Namenda as you did with Neurontin. I hate all of this med garbage, but I am not currently capable of totally dumping them. However, I am nearly desperate to speed up my cognitive function. At least I know now that I am not the only one with these problems.

How are you anyway? I doan't get on here alot as I am kept occupied trying to crawl down my academic path, thanks to meds. I shouldn't complain, at least the meds have proped me up enough to get this far, but are now apparently an unassailable impetiment that I would just as soon leave behind.
Maybe You should give school another try as it is quite satisfying when you get to the end of a semester, at least for me. My goal is to try and help people who are in the unenviable positions that some of us are.

My neurologist also suggested that I try a new drug called Lyrica (pregabalin). It is supposed to work the same way Neurontin does but with a lower dose. I have yet to try it but may next time I see her in December.

Onepaw,
I've been on Namenda for a little over 2 months with no obvious side effects. I was a bit aggitated when i first went on it, which was a side effect. My memory is slowing starting to come back, and I'm down to 200mg Neurontin a day. I had a terrible time with withdrawal symptoms in the process.

The only thing is that I also have RSD, and it's being used to treat that. I don't know if it would help with a BPI, that's something you would have to ask your doc.
